Description

BAL External Priming Slurry Bond is a highly polymer modified cementitious slurry primer, engineered for fixing natural stone and porcelain tiles or pavers in external areas onto BAL External Bedding Mortar to the requirements of BS 7533 or as a bonding slurry onto a mature concrete base. Comes in 20kg bags.

BAL External Priming Slurry Bond is suitable for applying suitable porcelain tiles, stone and pavers onto BAL External Bedding Mortar, and for preparing backgrounds for receiving mortar beds. Please note: This product is NOT suitable for: Use in total immersion, conventional tiling, internal use or use on vertical surfaces.

It is designed to be used in conjunction with the other BAL External Products – BAL External Terrace Grout, BAL External Bedding Mortar and BAL Level Out External Levelling Compound.

Key Features:

  • Excellent bond strength between base and pavers or tiles
  • Fast and simple to use
  • Only requires mixing with water
  • At 2mm thickness, one 20 kg pack of BAL External Priming Slurry Bond typically covers approximately 8m2.
  • Grout after 6-8 hours (at 20°C)

Preparation:

The external pavers and tiles should be laid at a level that is at least 150mm below the damp proof course of any adjacent building (except where level access is required at a doorway, e.g., for disabled access). Use a taut string line or a temporary chalk line as a guide for the installation.
All external pavers and tiles should be free of standing or pooling water. This is usually achieved by sloping the external pavers and tiles in one direction to guide the surface water towards a suitable disposal point, i.e., a gully, linear drain, or the edge of the terrace or patio, but wherever possible, surface water is directed away from any buildings. All external pavers and tiles require a stable base. Refer to Technical Data Sheet for further guidance.

Mixing:

1. One 20kg bag of BAL External Priming Slurry Bond requires approx. 6.4 litres of water.
2. Allow the mixed mortar to stand for 1-2 minutes before re-mixing for 30 seconds.
3. Mix thoroughly until a smooth, pourable consistency is obtained.
NOTE: If using an electric drill mixer, blend at slow speed (i.e., under 300rpm)
Ready for immediate use. Pot life at 20°C: 60 mins. Use at temperatures above 5°C and rising. NOTE: Working time/setting time will vary slightly with temperature: higher temperatures = shorter; lower temperatures = longer

Application onto concrete substrates and type 1 MOT sub-bases:

Before applying BAL External Priming Slurry Bond, ensure the concrete substrate is fully cured and free from efflorescence, laitance, dirt, polished concrete and other loose materials. Ensure that the concrete has cured for at least six weeks. Remove barriers to adhesion by the use of suitable mechanical methods. Apply the BAL External Priming Slurry Bond to the concrete substrate or Type 1 MOT sub-base using a trowel, roller or brush, achieving a depth of at least 2mm. Immediately apply BAL External Bedding Mortar onto the wet slurry.

Apply the BAL External Priming Slurry Bond to the wet BAL External Bedding Mortar (within the mortar’s working time) using a trowel, roller or brush, achieving a depth of at least 2mm. Immediately apply BAL External Priming Slurry Bond onto the back of the paver or tile to a depth of 1-2mm and achieving 100% coverage before fixing the tiles to the wet mortar. Adjust the position of the tiles as required and tap into position using a rubber mallet. Ensure a minimum of 3mm joints between the tiles.
